Perth Leisure Pool opensPrincess Anne officially opened the new £6.5 million showpiece, Perth Leisure Pool, accompanied by the great and the good of Perthshire together with most of the members of Perth and Kinross District Council.According to Provost Alec Murray, the Princess commented that the concept seemed very elaborate and must be difficult to run with so many different departments. She was amazed at the number of staff employed. The Provost also had the impression that she felt that it was “a bit too ambitious.” It was a very wet day and perhaps the Princess wasn’t feeling at her brightest and best. At any rate, one hopes that she had not meant to be so devastatingly condescending. Two hundred and fifty specially invited schoolchildren were in the Pool and they certainly enjoyed the visit. Fiona White (9) of Perth presented a bouquet to the Princess and James Duff a cheque to be given to the charity of her choice. Of course the pool had actually been opened on July 31st and by October 12th it had already been used by 100,000 people. In spite of the Princess Royal’s fears, the Pool has been and continues to be a great success. |
