In spite of the general obsession with religion and the great dangers of eternal damnation, the people of
Perth still proved to be natural backsliders.
From the Session records, “Because the sins of Fornication and Adultery does increase more and
more to the great offence and dishonour of God and slander of this congregation, the session ordains
that a more public place of repentance be bigged and to contain degrees that therein Fornicators and
Adulterers may be distinguished both by their place and habit.”
