The Agave Americana

There was great excitement when a plant known as the Agave Americana at last came into flower in the hothouses of Drummond Castle near Muthill.

Its height was then 23 feet and it was estimated that over the period of flowering it produced over 2,500 blooms. Interest was such that persons came from all over Scotland to see this miracle. When it had finished flowering it promptly died. It was believed at the time that the plant only flowered once in a hundred years. This is not strictly true but it does take a long time to flower and is monocarpic, that is to say it only flowers once in its life cycle.

We now know that the plant flourishes outside in parts of the south of France and countries bordering the Mediterranean.
